Dyson’s v6 Mattress: A Powerful Vacuum For Your… Bed?!
It may be scary to contemplate, but we are all basically living colonies of bacteria, consume a fair bit of mold regularly, and sleep in our own private colonies of dust mites. The human condition is far from totally hygenic no matter how many times you’ve washed your hands or showered. You can’t do much about some of those problems- we need those bacteria, as they outnumber our own cells 10 to 1. But you can do something about the dust mites, and probably should, especially if you suffer from asthma or allergies.
The Dyson v6 Mattress Cordless Vacuum is a high-powered handheld vac that aims to clean up the invisible mess that is your bed. When we first mentioned the product to others, the inevitable response was: “a vacuum for your mattress”? And the answer is essentially, yes- you can also use the little guy as a regular vacuum for small dry spills, and we managed to clean some carpets thoroughly. The included upholstery and crevice tools expand it’s range somewhat but the specialty motorizes head makes it best suited for it’s specific task, and the fairly short battery life limits applications to small areas. It’s compact and easy to store, but should live near your bedroom for regular recharging and convenient use.
As with other Dyson vacuums that we’ve seen- like their model aimed at handling animal fur and their carpet cleaner- they’ve found a unique styling and industrial design with a very modern appearance. Those plastic bubbles and curves mask an aggressive internal motor that is the heart of their system, this one with 15 separate cyclones arranged across two tiers and true HEPA filtration to prevent what you’re cleaning up from simply blowing around the room. As with most of their versions, you hold down a trigger to fire it up, and can also activate a sort of overdrive for additional oomph at the cost of battery life- on regular power, expect it to last about 16-20 minutes between charges, which drops to six minutes if you’re in Max power mode. Thankfully, it lasted long enough for to handle an entire king-sized mattress. The unit itself is fairly small, but this leads to a fairly tiny dustbin- you’ll want to clean it out between each use which is as simple as pressing a red button over a garbage can.
Speaking of which- you’ll be surprised by the quantity of stuff that you’ll pull up. Dyson estimates a mattress can contain anywhere between 10,000 and two million dust mites and if you have a pet that sleeps with you, the Dyson v6 Mattress will quickly accumulate an astonishing the amount of hair. That’s partially thanks to the stiff bristles on the motorized head, which does a great job at digging deep. A regular hand vac doesn’t stand a chance- but is certainly a fraction of the price. Available now, online and in stores, the Dyson v6 Mattress truly succeeds at fulfilling it’s chosen niche, but might feel expensive for a limited-purpose (if aesthetically pleasing) appliance.
